In 1989, Denver Bronco’s quarterback John Elway, a member of the much-heralded quarterback class of 1983, led his underrated Denver team to the Super Bowl, only to suffer a humiliating defeat to the Washington Redskins in front of the whole world. This was the last time the Broncos made an appearance in the big game until 1997, when led by the seemingly ageless John Elway, Denver returned to the Super Bowl. Head coach Mike Shanahan and the rest of the Bronco team made 1997 a personal crusade, steering them to a dozen victories as the NFLs highest scoring team. Unlike 1989, Elway found many able suitors supporting his given talent; offensively Denver threatened from every corner, from the deep threat of Rod Smith to the unstoppable, ubiquitous running of Terrell Davis (eventual Super Bowl MVP). Defensively the rugged belligerence of Neil Smith and Steve Atwater dictated a pass rush orientated defense that dominated all opposition.
